“Black Virginians in Blue” Blog Post for Muster

I’d like to thank Dr. Hilary Green for the opportunity to write a blog post titled, Black Virginians in Blue: A Digital Project Studying Black Union Soldiers and Sailors from Albemarle County, Virginia, for Muster, the blog of the Journal of the Civil War Era, about our upcoming digital project, Black Virginians in Blue.

The blog post goes over some of the more salient findings of our project, with a close look at the life of Reverend Jesse Sumner Cowles, a Black veteran who was born in Albemarle County, VA, and served in the 29th Connecticut Infantry Regiment. I would like to acknowledge my debt to Samantha Dorm and everyone at the York History Center for being able to write this biography of Cowles, a true hero of the Union.
